Steering Rack Repair (Reconditioning)
Steering rack repair is the process of fully restoring the unit's functionality. We eliminate leaks, knocks, and play, returning the rack to like-new specifications. This includes replacing all worn internal components and high-precision shaft machining.
What is included in the repair process:
-
Complete disassembly and inspection: Assessing the condition of the shaft, gears, and housing.
-
Shaft grinding/polishing: Removing corrosion and scoring on a precision lathe.
-
Seal kit replacement: Installing new oil seals, O-rings, bushings, and bearings.
-
Adjustment: Fine-tuning the rack tensioner to eliminate play.
-
Bench testing: Testing the rack under high pressure for leaks and smooth operation before reinstallation.
Signs that the rack is repairable:
-
Stiffness in steering or visible power steering fluid leaks.
-
Rattling or clunking felt through the steering wheel when the suspension is fine.
-
"Dead spots" or binding when turning the wheel.
